Location: Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona
Built: 2012-2013
Architect: Estudio H Arquitectes (David Lorente, Josep Ricart, Xavier Ros, Roger Tudó).
The plot, located in a residential neighbourhood of Sant Cugat, could be the main concept of the house, one of the main challenges of this project was to achieve a house intrinsically related to the garden. That’s why the project tries to find an equilibrium between locating the highest amount of pieces on the ground floor, and keeping the garden as free of construction as possible. That creates 3 boxes, almost aligned and close to the north area of the plot.
The first box, at the east, contains the kids zone, with 3 individual bedrooms on the first floor and a common studio on ground floor. The second box (central) is the principal piece of the house, it contains the kitchen, a 30m2 room, a 4m height ceiling and a chimney. The third box, at the west, contains the parents’ area, the bedroom on the garden level and a studio on first floor, also with a high ceiling. Spaces in between boxes are covered with slabs, creating two protected areas opened to the garden from north to south, that can be closed with bending glass panels. Completely different spaces from the inside areas of the “boxes”.
The house is made of ceramic walls with visible brick from the outside and painted in white on the inside. The joinery is made of wood and the windows can be protected from the sun by traditional wooden roller shutters. The pavement is continuous concrete.
